The definition
Manifestation is any permanent marking — frosted film, printed graphics, cut vinyl logos, dots or bands — applied to large areas of transparent glazing so that the glass is apparent to everyone using the building, including people with visual impairments.
It applies to glass that could be mistaken for an opening: full-height partitions, glazed doors and screens, and large panes in circulation routes.
When it is required
Approved Document M of the building standards covers access to and use of buildings, and expects critical glazing to be marked. In practice, if your office fit-out includes floor-to-ceiling glass partitioning or glazed doors on a circulation route, manifestation is required to sign off the fit-out and is checked by building control.
It also comes up outside new fit-outs: a change of tenant, a partition alteration, or a workplace risk assessment following a walk-into incident.
Height bands and contrast
The guidance points to marking within roughly 850–1000mm and 1400–1600mm from finished floor level, so it is visible to seated and standing users alike. Both bands, or a continuous treatment covering them, is the usual solution.
Contrast matters as much as position. The marking has to remain visible against whatever is behind the glass in all lighting conditions — which is why a pale logo repeat that works against a white wall can fail completely against a dark meeting room or a night-time window.
Making it brand work rather than a compliance tax
The requirement is a fixed height band. Everything else is a design decision. Gradient dot fades, tinted pattern work, cut brand marks repeated at a set pitch, or a printed graphic that also gives meeting rooms privacy all satisfy the same rule.
The best schemes do three jobs at once: they meet Approved Document M, they add the privacy the rooms actually need, and they carry the brand through the space. Getting there starts with a survey of the sightlines, not with a drawing.
